CORNING — Taking on the third-ranked Class A team in the state, the Corning Hawks were locked in a close game all afternoon, before a three-run sixth led Maine-Endwell to a 5-1 win.

Maine-Endwell took the lead in the fourth as they got two runs, but Corning answered with a run the next inning as Kayleigh Sparks drove in Lauren DeRosa, who had walked.

The Spartans got the three runs in the sixth to win it.

Both pitchers went the distance in the game, combining to limit the opposing teams to 10 hits between them.

Olivia Lewis threw a four-hitter for Maine-Endwell, striking out 11 and allowing one unearned run. Payton Sullivan struck out five and allowed six hits and five runs, three earned, for the Hawks.

Sophia Polzella had two hits for Corning and Daphne Sherman and Courtney Searfoss each had hits.

While the Spartans are ranked third in Class A in the state, the Hawks are 26th in Class AA in the state rankings.
