Southern Tier Sports ReportHORSEHEADS — The Horseheads Blue Raiders scored four runs in the first two innings on their way to a 5-1 win over Elmira in a key divisional matchup.
Horseheads scored two first-inning and two second-inning runs in the win. The victory moves Horseheads to 2-1 in the division, tied with Corning. The two teams meet tomorrow at Corning.
In the opening inning Megan and Molly Wolf each walked and after Bella Giammichele got on base, third strike and Katie Morse walked with Molly Wolf out at second, Rachel Lunger tripled home two runs for Horseheads.
In the second inning Katie Morse walked and Kristen Cole homered to make it 4-0 Blue Raiders.
Elmira got a third-inning run as Ryleigh Ogden singled to lead off the inning and Payton Ross hit a two-out double to score her.
Horseheads added a run in the sixth as Caitlin Yearick singled and Sophia Bonnell ran for her and Megan Wolf singled, with Bonnell scoring on an error on the play.
Emily Huntley went three innings on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out one, allowing one run. Megan Wolf went four innings, allowing just one hit and no walks, striking out five.
Cole had two hits, with the home run, two RBI and a run scored and Lunger had the triple and two RBI, while Yearick and Molly Wolf had hits.
Ross had the double and RBI for Elmira and Ogden had the hit and run scored, while Abby Lambert had a hit.
Ross went the distance on the mound for Elmira, allowing five hits and striking out 12.
