HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: NOTRE DAME DROPS PAIR OF CLOSE GAMES TO TEAMS RANKED TOP TWO IN THE STATE (2023-04-29)
Southern Tier Sports ReportCHENANGO VALLEY — The Notre Dame softball team dropped a pair of close games to state-ranked powers on Saturday.
Notre Dame faced a pair of unbeaten teams. They fell 2-1 to Deposit-Hancock, the top ranked team in the state in Class D, and they fell 9-6 to Chenango Valley, ranked second in the state in Class B. Notre Dame entered the day fourth ranked in the state in Class C.
Against Deposit-Hancock it was a pitcher’s dual with the two teams combining for five hits on the day. O
Olivia Switzer threw a three-hitter for Notre Dame, striking out eight and allowing two runs, one earned.
Notre Dame had two hits on the day, one of them a solo home run by Lawson Bigelow. Shannon Maloney also had a hit on the day.
Against Chenango Valley the Crusaders fell behind 5-0 after one inning, but scored six in the second to lead 6-5. However, Chenango Valley got two in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead and then they tacked on runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Switzer was 3-for-4 with two RBI and she had a double. Maloney had two hits, with a double, an RBI and a run scored and Bigelow had a double.
Switzer struck out six on the mound.
Ava Mustico had a hit, an RBI and a run scored and Payton Miller had a hit and scored a run. Maddie Fargo had a hit and scored a run and Izzy Griffin and Layla Sullivan each scored runs, while Reagan Burge had an RBI.
