HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: CORNING RALLIES, BUT COMES UP SHORT AGAINST VESTAL (2023-04-21)

CORNING — The Corning Hawks rallied late, but came up short against Vestal in a matchup of state-ranked teams, 9-5.

Vestal is now 9-0, and ranked third in the state in Class A. Corning is 7-2 and ranked 11th in the state in AA.

Vestal got off to an 8-0 lead in the game, before Corning fought back.

Vestal scored two in the first, two in the second and four in the fourth.

Corning got four runs back in the fifth to get within 8-4, but both teams got a run in the sixth.

Sophia Polzella wad 3-for-4 with three RBI, a double, a triple and a run scored.

Kendall Curreri had a double and Lauren DeRosa had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

Kayleigh Sparks had a hit and scored two runs and Lily MacNeal scored a run, while Maddie Dibble had an RBI.

Peyton Sullivan struck out three in 6 1/3 innings and Anya Beres got the last two outs.

Vestal got two home runs in the game, both by future D1 players. Caitlyn Petteys, a junior committed to UConn, had a home run and scored three runs and Kendall Brady, a junior committed to Holy Cross, had a double, a home run, five RBI and a run scored.

Corning is at Horseheads at 5 p.m. on Monday.
