WELCOME TO SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT (2021-08-16)

Welcome to Southern Tier Sports Report — the fifth site in “The Sports Reports” family.

Our goal is to provide extensive and thorough coverage of high school and youth sports for all five school districts in the Elmira-Corning area.

Southern Tier Sports Report will focus on Corning, Elmira, Horseheads, Notre Dame, and Thomas A. Edison.

Every story will run on the site’s Home Page, but each school will have its own page for those stories focused mainly on their teams. There is also a Youth Sports page, an Opinion page, a page dedicated to season previews and wrap-ups (all-star stories, etc.), and a College page, where we’ll follow the exploits of the student-athletes as they take their talents to the next level.

Each school page will include weekly and full season schedules, as well as a list of coaches for that season.

You’re going to see a lot more photos on Southern Tier Sports Report than you’re accustom to seeing in the traditional coverage of high school sports.

One of the most appealing aspects of our site for most fans is that the site is updated throughout the day whenever possible.

My main focus remains on the day-to-day operation of Valley Sports Report, and “The Sports Reports” as a whole, but you’ll see my photos and bylines when Edison or Notre Dame are in the Valley to play Waverly or Tioga. And, occasionally, I’ll be in the Elmira-Corning area to cover a game if needed.

The day-to-day operations of Southern Tier Sports Report, however, will be in the very capable hands of Brian Fees, the former longtime Sports Editor of The Daily Review in Towanda.

Brian is a very talented photographer and a strong writer. I have the utmost confidence that our readers will enjoy the coverage he provides the local student-athletes from Day 1.

On a personal level, I’m excited about expanding our coverage into the Elmira-Corning area.

I grew up in Chemung, and graduated from Waverly in 1984. I watched some great athletes in the Elmira-Corning area, and played against some as well, namely Pete Curkendall (that was a long afternoon).

The coverage of today’s student-athletes has nearly dried up. We are here to fill in that gap, to give these student-athletes the coverage they deserve — the exposure they need to be seen by coaches and recruiters at the next level.

We will never hide behind a pay wall, our coverage will always be free. In order to do that, we need advertisers. If you are interested in advertising, contact me. If you know someone who may be interested, spread the word.

I’d like to thank a group of advertisers that jumped on board with us prior to Day 1. My thanks goes out Blaise-Alexander, Simmons-Rockwell, Guthrie Sports Medicine, Dandy Mini Marts, Rainbow Lettering, Gerould’s Pharmacy, Coldiron Fuel, Sutryk & Sons, and CVS.

I look forward to a long relationship with readers in the area. Hopefully, I’ll see you on the sidelines.

Enjoy, and spread the word.
