HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: ELMIRA'S SMITH INTO QUARTERFINALS AT H.S. NATIONALS (2023-03-24)
Southern Tier Sports ReportVIRGINIA BEACH — Elmira senior Donavan Smith sailed through to the quarterfinals of the National High School Coaches Association High School Nationals with three straight wins here Friday.
Smith opened the day with a pin of Caleb Swanson of Virginia in 2:37 in the round-of-64. Smith scored three takedowns in the first period, and finished off the first period with three near-fall points for a 9-2 lead. He added a reversal in the second period, and turned it into the fall.
Smith used used a five-point move in the first period, and a takedown and three near-fall pints in the second period to build a 10-0 lead on his way to a 12-2 major decision of Maine’s Derek Cote in the round-of-32.
In the round-of-16, Smith recorded a third-period fall of Alabama’s Devin Stone.
Smith scored a reversal with 7 seconds remaining in the second period to tie the bout at 2-2 heading into the final two minutes.
Stone cut Smith loose to start the third period, but scored a five-point move to take an 8-2 lead, then finished off the fall at 5:19.
Smith will face Tyler McKnight of Georgia in the quarterfinals. McKnight was 4-0 Friday with two falls and a major decision.
