SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT: D'ANGELO HEADLINES ELITE 8 NEWCOMERS OF THE WINTER SEASON (2023-03-23)

They may have been newcomers, but they had big roles in their sports this winter.

It’s time to look at the best newcomers of the winter season with an Elite Eight All-Southern Tier Sports Report newcomers of the winter.

The first five will be listed in no particular order, then we will do the second runner-up, runner-up and newcomers of the winter.

JACK FESETCH, HORSEHEADS
Was one of the best shooters in the league as a sophomore and he could take things to an even higher level next season.

A starter for a Section IV Championship team.

GAVIN HORNSBY, HORSEHEADS
The freshman Gavin Hornsby was a sectional runner-up and went 15-14 on the year and was the newcomer of the year for the all-STSR wrestling team.

JOEY CRISCO, CORNING
The seventh grader placed fourth in the 200 IM and third in the 100 breaststroke. He hit a split of 52.05 anchoring the 400 free relay, which helped Corning clinch a tie with Horseheads for the team title at sectionals.

The all-STSR boys’ swimming and diving newcomer of the year.

WYATT MCDONALD, CORNING
Had the best 300 time among freshmen in Section 4, running a 39.11 this year.

He made states as a member of the Corning Hawks’ 1600 relay.

He took 16th at the class state qualifier meet in the 300 in 40.06.

RYDER DEPAUDA-REESE, ELMIRA
The eighth grader finished 16-10 on the season for the Elmira Express, and placed at both the sectional and STAC Championships.

Finished third at sectionals and fifth in the STAC Championships.

SECOND RUNNER-UP:
NOLYN PROUDFOOT, CORNING

As a seventh grader playing varsity he put up 11.4 points a game and was 43 for 132 for 33% from three. He was an 83% free throw shooter on the season.

He scored 183 points this year, had 22 deflections, 17 steals and drew four charges.

RUNNER-UP:
JEREMIAH PARKER, ND

Averaged 20 points a game in his first season for the Crusaders. Was one of the best scorers in the region despite teams keying on him defensively. The All-STSR boys’ basketball newcomer of the year.

NEWCOMER OF THE WINTER:
FRANKIE D’ANGELO, ELMIRA

The seventh-grader averaged 194 this year, and he came up huge in the state tournament, striking out in the 10th of the final game to help Elmira clinch the state title.

The Express won the first state title in any sport in Elmira Express history and only the second in the history of the Elmira School District, the first being Southside bowling.

The all-STSR bowling newcomer of the year.
