SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT: BERRY HEADLINES ELITE 8 NEWCOMERS OF THE WINTER SEASON (2023-03-23)

They may have been newcomers, but they quickly made their mark on their sports throughout the winter season.

It’s down to an Elite Eight All-Southern Tier Sports Report newcomers of the year.

We will list the first five in no particular order, and then we will have a second runner-up, a runner-up and then the newcomer of the winter.

PIPER HOOEY, ELMIRA
One of the best jumpers in the section in her first year doing indoor track and field.

Hooey was fifth at the state qualifiers and qualified for the Rising Star Division at New Balance Nationals, where she placed 38th at 33-feet, 1/4-inches.

She had a best triple jump this winter of 34-feet, 5 1/2-inches.

CHARLEE STROMAN, EDISON
Stroman scored nearly five points and added five boards a game. She added 1.2 assists and 1.2 steals a game and became a key offensive contributor in the second half of the year for the Spartans.

CELLA MCLAUGHLIN, CORNING
Had a long jump of 16-feet, 7 1/2-inches this indoor season, the second best in New York State for a freshman, and the best among Section 4 freshmen.

She took 18th at indoor nationals in the freshman long jump at 16-feet, 4 1/4-inches.

She was a state qualifier as part of the 1600 relay.

ELLA DEVLIN, ELMIRA
Was sixth in the state qualifiers in the 1500 meters in 5:16.01.

Was 28th at New Balance Nationals, in the middle school division, in the one mile at 5:38.08.

Had a best time this winter of 3:19.19 in the 1000 and 11:25.85 in the 3000.

JORDYN GROSS, HORSEHEADS
The Blue Raiders’ Jordyn Gross led her team with 10.5 rebounds a game and scored seven points a game, including 20 in the sectional semifinal against Maine-Endwell. The six-foot sophomore improved each game and is the newcomer of the year for all-STSR girls' basketball.

SECOND RUNNER-UP:
ABIGAIL HINK, ELMIRA
Elmira’s Abigail Hink is the newcomer of the year. The Express bowler averaged 166 on the season and helped the team take fifth in the state.

Elmira also won the state qualifying tournament to make it to states.

RUNNER-UP:
SOPHIA CIMO, CORNING

Had a best throw of 41-feet, 1/4-inches in the weight throw, the best among newcomers in Section 4.

She took 24th at the state championships in the event.

NEWCOMER OF THE WINTER:
HAILEY BERRY, HORSEHEADS

The senior went 30-6 on the year and won a sectional title, a STAC title and titles at the UE Tradesman Tournament and the Oneonta tournament.

She will wrestle at Elmira College next season.
