HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' WRESTLING: COOK, BERRY HEADLINE FIRST ALL-STSR GIRLS' WRESTLING ALL-STAR TEAM (2023-03-22)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportThe first season with high school girls’ wrestling teams in New York State is in the books, and there were some big performances this year.
Almost every wrestler in the area was a newcomer, with a couple exceptions, and picking a Super 7 All-Southern Tier Sports Report all-star team was a tough task.
We have a wrestler of the year, and then a Super 7 all-star team. We keep the wrestler of the year separate from the Super 7, just so we can get one more wrestler onto the Super 7 squad.
This year’s wrestler of the year is Jade Cook of Corning.
One of the few returning wrestlers from last year, when Cook was a sectional runner-up in the first year with a sectional wrestling tournament for girls, Cook was again a sectional runner-up, and she was also the only local to place at states, taking fourth at 160 pounds in the first New York State girls’ wrestling championships.
She finished the year 21-7.
The newcomer of the year, and it’s a tough award to win with so many newcomers, is Hailey Berry of Horseheads.
The senior went 30-6 on the year and won a sectional title, a STAC title and titles at the UE Tradesman Tournament and the Oneonta tournament.
She will wrestle at Elmira College next season.
The Super 7 includes Berry and teammates MayAnna Sindlinger, Narayani Wiehe and Chloe Owen and Corning’s Tayler Pierce and Keegan Rhodes, along with Edison’s Abigail Johnson.
WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Jade Cook, Corning 21-7, 2nd place in Section IV Championships. Fourth place finisher at states.
