HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: CORNING'S DOBSON MAKES HISTORY AS SHE SCORES HER 1,000TH CAREER POINT (March 2, 2023)

BINGHAMTON — When Alyssa Dobson was younger she watched as Liv LeBaron scored her 1,000th career point for the Corning Hawks.

It was just over seven years ago when LeBaron hit the milestone in January of 2016, and Dobson, who was in elementary school at the time hoped that one day she might achieve the same thing.

On Friday she joined the 1,000-point club herself, hitting a short jumper in the lane with 3:45 left in the third quarter to reach the milestone.

“I remember when I was a little kid watching our high school kids and I remember watching Liv LeBaron get 1,000 and I was just hoping that would be me one day,” Dobson said.

It was a milestone that Dobson dreamed of, but after Covid drastically shortened her sophomore year it’s a milestone she wasn’t sure she would ever reach.

“I didn’t even know, I had no clue what I was at the whole year, no one told me,” Dobson said.

Corning coach Jamie Nichols knows how impressive the achievement is.

“That’s remarkable,” he said. “She is so gifted offensively. She guards a big on defense, but offensively she can score in the paint, she can score form the outside, and to get her 1,000th point, even with the Covid year. The Covid year she only got seven games in. I don’t know what she ended up with this year, but it was well over 300 points and I know her other two years were like that as well, except the Covid year.”

Dobson has always put in the work to try and make herself better.

“I am always in the gym and trying to get better,” Dobson said.

When she got her 1,000th point the Hawks called a timeout and the fans held up a banner and Dobson’s teammates went crazy, cheering on their teammates achievement.

“It was great, they are so supportive,” Dobson said. “It’s great that I have teammates like that.”

And, getting the milestone is something special for Dobson.

“It’s crazy, it doesn’t feel real honestly,” Dobson said.

The only hard part about the milestone was having it come in a sectional final loss to Binghamton.

“It’s special,” Dobson said of the milestone. “I would have rather had a sectional chip (championship), but it’s nice.”

Dobson plans to play basketball in college and she’s hoping that the next four years are as special as these past four years have been.

“Hopefully it will be just as good as this,” Dobson said.
