HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: FOR 2ND STRAIGHT YEAR EDISON GIRLS OPEN PLAYOFFS WITH A WIN (24 PHOTOS) (February 23, 2023)Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA HEIGHTS -- After a two decade wait to win a
sectional playoff game, this group is making it a yearly thing these days.
One year after breaking their long playoff drought, the
Edison girls' basketball team opened the playoffs with a win again this year,
beating Bainbridge-Guilford 62-43 on Thursday night.
"It was a
bittersweet moment," senior Gianna McGee said. "The last time
I'll play on my home court. I think it was well deserved for us, even though we
didn't play our absolute best. WE still came out there and took a ig win. We're
ready for Saturday and to bring our all."
Four Edison players scored in double figures in the win,
led by Payton Littlefield's 22 points, along with four steals, four assists and
six boards.
"It was great to win tonight," Littlefield
said. "WE are on a really good run right now and are playing together well
as a team."
McGee finished with 19 points and was just one rebound
short of a double-double with nine boards, along with four assists.
Littlefield and McGee combined for six threes for the
Spartans.
Harper Hoffmann had a dominant game in the paint with 14
points, 12 boards and six blocks.
Charlee Stroman had five points and Gabby Milazzo had two
points, three steals, two assists and two rebounds.
"It feels great," Stroman said of the win.
"We didn't start out as strong as we hoped, but we came together as a team
in the end to get the win.
Edison led just 13-12 after one quarter and 28-22 at the
break, but outscored Bainbridge-Guilford 36-21 in the second half of the win
"I'm very proud of my team and how we played and I'm
hoping for another great win on Saturday."
Now, it's a rematch with Unatego, at 4 p.m. on Saturday
at Unatego. Edison is the five seed and Unatego is the fourth seed. A year ago
Unatego ended the Spartans' season.
"We're really excited to get to play Unatego again
this year," Littlefield said. "Hopefully with a different
outcome."
