STSR PRESENTS THE DRAKE HVAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: HORSEHEADS' MASSENGALE AND BONNELL (2023-01-22)

Southern Tier Sports Report
There were a lot of great performances this week, leading to some tough choices for the athlete of the week honors. In the end, it was Horseheads’ Ryan Massengale and Sophia Bonnell who are the Southern Tier Sports Report, sponsored by Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning, Athletes of the Week.

Athletes are eligible to be chosen once through the regular season and then when the postseason begins they can be chosen again.

SOPHIA BONNELL
HORSEHEADS, GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Combined to have 38 points and seven threes in a pair of big games this week.

Against Elmira the junior had three threes and 17 points to help lead the Blue Raiders to a big division win.

Against Johnson City  she had four threes and 21 points for the Blue Raiders.

RYAN MASSENGALE
HORSEHEADS, WRESTLING
The Blue Raiders senior had a 5-0 week, with four first period pins, across two huge tournaments this week.

Things started at the Section 4, Division I team duals. Massengale had two wins, one a pin in 47 seconds up a weight against Elmira, to help the Blue Raiders win their third straight sectional title.

Then, Massengale went to the STAC Championships, where he again turned in a dominant performance.

Massengale won his three matches in a grand total of two minutes and 34 seconds. No wrestler needed less time on the weekend to win the title.

The longest match Massengale had all weekend was 1:16. And, he did it against three wrestlers who were all .500 or better, and had a combined record of 37-20 on the season.
