HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: EDISON'S JOHNSON WINS IAC GIRLS' TITLE; THREE BOYS PLACE AT LEAGUE MEET (2023-01-22)

WAVERLY — Abigail Johnson won an IAC girls’ title, while three Edison boys placed at the IAC Championships on Saturday.

Johnson won the girls’ title at 185 sounds, pinning Waverly’s Elizabeth Robinson in 1:04.

Julian Buzzetti, Greg Golden and Cody Lucero all placed in the boys championship.

At 132 Buzzetti opened with a pin in 4:28 and then another pin in 3:15 to get to the semifinals.

He fell in the semifinals, and in the consolation round dropped a match to go to the fifth-place match, where he recorded a pin in 2:48 to take fifth.

At 145 Greg Golden earned fifth the hard way. He dropped his first match of the day. Then he won by injury default in 2:13, got a technical fall win 16-0 to get into the podium. He dropped a 5-1 match to go to the fifth-place match, where he won by forfeit.

Cody Lucero took fifth at 152. He got a medical forfeit win and then pinned teammate Ethan Smith in 1:42 to reach the semifinals.

After a loss in the semifinals, he dropped a hard-fought 3-1 match that put him in the fifth-place match, where he got a forfeit win.

Jace Shiller was 2-2 on the day, just missing the podium at 132. He lost a hard-fought 6-4 sudden victory match but then won two straight in the consolation rounds, the first by fall in 1:37, the second by major decision 12-0.

Aiden Shangraw was 0-2 at 132 and Mason Barchet was 0-2 at 160.

Smith got a pin in his first match in 1:34 at 152 and then dropped his next two matches on the day.
