Southern Tier Sports Report
OWEGO — It was a strong day for the Corning Hawks girls’ wrestling team at the STAC Championships.

Jade Cook won the title at 165 and Keegan Rhodes (114), Jenna Comer (126) and Karen-Marie Rivera (145) all took second.

Elisabeth App (107) was third and Keeley Turner (107) took sixth.

“The girls had a great showing at the league championship,” Corning coach Brian Guilfoyle said. “It was really special to see a significant number of girls representing Corning wrestling in the finals of their league tournament.

“Some new wrestlers like Elisabeth Epp medaled for the first time in their first year participating in the sport, which is always a special moment.”

Select Corning girls have a state wide tournament next Friday in Syracuse at the SRC Arena. Rhodes, Cook and Tayler Pierce will represent Section IV at the State Championship Competition.

“This league championship served as great preparation for that event too,” Guilfoyle said.

Cook pinned Lani Witshire of Oneonta in the 165-pound final to earn the title.
