TRAVEL BASEBALL (15U): FINGER LAKES FALCONS FINISH SECOND AT 'JUNIOR CRUSH 16 SUMMER CLASSIC' (2021-08-29)

CORTLAND — The Finger Lakes Falcons 15U travel baseball team won its first four games, before dropping a 3-1 decision to the Mannsville N.Y.-based BH Bulls in the championship game of the “Junior Crush 16U Summer Classic” here Aug. 21-22.

The Falcons team is comprised of players from Horseheads, Waverly, Elmira, Watkins Glen, and Haverling.

Pool Play
Finger Lakes Falcons 12, MMB 0
The Falcons banged out 11 hits in a 12-0 three-inning win over Williamsville, N.Y.-based Mathewson-McCarthy Baseball in the opening game of pool play Saturday afternoon.

Watkins Glen’s Daniel Lewis pitched a three-inning no-hitter, striking out four and walking one to earn the win.

Horseheads’ Brody Liddy homered and singled, scored two runs, and had three RBI, while Lewis doubled and singled, scored one run, and drove in three runs, and Horseheads’ Alex Daugherty singled twice and scored one run to pace the Falcons at the plate.

Horseheads’ Nate Levey singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run in the win, while Waverly’s Ty Beeman singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, Waverly’s Nate DeLill and Havering’s Ethan Brotz each singled and drove in one run, and Waverly’s Joey Tomasso scored one run, and had two RBI.

Finger Lake Falcons 7, Ithaca Arsenal 2
The Falcons improved to 2-0 in pool play with a 7-2 win over the Ithaca Arsenal Saturday afternoon.

Tomasso earned the win, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out eight and walking five in four innings of work.

The Falcons led 3-0 after 1 1/2 innings, and scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead.

Beeman singled twice and drove in one run, and Liddy also singled twice to pace the Falcons’ eight-hit attack.

Daugherty singled, scored once, and drove in one run in the win, while Lewis, Brotz, and Tomasso each singled and scored one run. Horseheads’ Dominick Russ, who had an RBI in the first game, drove in two runs, and Waverly’s Jay Pipher added an RBI.

Quarterfinals
Finger Lakes Falcons 8, MMB 0
Liddy tossed a two-hitter, and the Falcons banged out four extra-base hits, including three triples, to blank MMB, 8-0, in the quarterfinals of bracket play.

Liddy struck out two and walked two in the five-inning complete-game win.

Daugherty tripled and singled, scored one run, and drove in one run to lead the Falcons at the plate, while Russ tripled, scored once, and drove in two runs, Beeman tripled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and DeLill doubled, scored one run, and drove in one run.

Tomasso singled and knocked in a run in the win, while Levey singled and scored one run, and Horseheads’ Mason Holloway singled and scored one run. Elmira’s Damon Jackson and Pipher each scored one run, and Liddy had one RBI.

Semifinals
Finger Lakes Falcons 7, DP Bulls 1
Holloway and Daugherty combined on a one-hitter to lead the Falcons to a 7-1 win over the DP Bulls in the semifinals Sunday evening.

Holloway allowed one run on one hit, while striking out five and walking five in five innings to earn the win. Daugherty struck out three and walked two in two hitless innings of relief.

Pipher doubled and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI to lead the Falcons at the plate,, while Liddy singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, Jackson doubled and scored one run, and Daugherty singled and scored one run.

Tomasso added a double in the win, while DeLill singled, Levey scored a pair of runs, and Holloway drove in one run.

Championship game
BH Bulls 3, Finger Lake Falcons 1
The Mannsville, N.Y.-based BH Bulls scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead en route to a 3-1 win in the championship game under the lights Sunday night.

The Bulls scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Beeman’s two-out RBI double in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 1-1.

The Bulls took the lead on a two-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth.

The Falcons stranded one runner on base in each of the last two innings.

Pipher was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on two hits, while striking six and walking three in four innings of work.

Daugherty started for the Falcons, allowing an unearned run on three hits, while striking out three and walking none in three innings on the mound.

Beeman doubled and singled, and drove in one run to pace the Falcons’ four-hit attack, while Daugherty singled and scored one run, and Holloway added a single.

The Falcons were 16-5 over the summer, including a second-place finish at the PBR Northeast National Qualifier.
