Southern Tier Sports Report
The Corning Hawks had a year for the ages, winning sectionals and regionals, and making it to the state Final Four.

With their success the Hawks have four of the major award winners for the all-Southern Tier Sports Report All-Star team, including the player of the year.

Senior Jenna DiNardo is this year’s all-STSR Player of the Year. DiNardo did a little bit of everything for the Hawks this year. The ultimate winner also helped lead the Hawks basketball team to the state final four a year ago.

DiNardo was the setter for the Hawks and had 503 assists on the year. She also had 284 digs and 117 points. She also could be a force at the net at times, getting eight kills in the sub-regional game as she tipped over on two catching the defense off guard.

DiNardo’s teammate Olivia Keegan is the offensive player of the year. Keegan, who had a game winning hit in 2019 to help the Hawks softball team win a state title, had 231 kills on the year and she also added 214 digs and 153 points.

The Hawks’ Isabelle Moon is the newcomer of the year. Moon had 84 kills and 38 digs, along with 21 blocks. While the numbers might not lead the team, she was a force down the stretch and dominant at times in the playoffs as the Hawks made the final four.

After a magical year for Corning their coach, Barb Smith, is this year’s all-STSR coach of the year.

Horseheads’ Shelby Gush was the defensive player of the year. Gush had 24 blocks this year and was a force at the net defensively. She also had 57 kills, 54 digs and 14 aces on the year for the Blue Raiders.

Shae Thomas of Horseheads is this year’s unsung hero of the year. Thomas plays with an energy level that few can match and often was a spark for the Blue Raiders. She was an all-around player who could excel at the net, or on the back line.

The all-STSR Terrific 12 all-star team includes DiNardo, Keegan, Gush and Moon.

The rest of the all-star team includes Corning’s Lindsay Stratton and Grace Freeman, Elmira’s Paityn Chorney and Hannah Lambert, Horseheads’ Kendall Saglibene and Mia Foster and Edison’s Emma Maggs and Gabby Milazzo.

Moon headlines the all-STSR rookie team and is joined on the rookie team by teammates Piper Emmick and Hannah Smith, Elmira’s Addison Chorney, Madisen Jones and Austyn Johnson, Horseheads’ Shae Thomas and Katie Hinman and Edison’s Charlee Stroman and Maycie Bennett.
