Southern Tier Sports Report
It was a dominant year in area girls’ cross country.

Four teams had state qualifiers this year, while two earned state medals, and the Corning girls matched their best ever finish with a fourth-place finish at the state meet.

Sarah Lawson of Corning led the way this year as a sixth-place finisher at states and she is the All-Southern Tier Sports Report Runner of the Year.

Lawson won the Section 4 and STAC titles and ran an 18:02.60 at states to take fourth, her second state medal. She also helped Corning tie the west finish in school history with the fourth-place finish.

Elmira eighth-grader Ella Devlin was a state qualifier in her first year of varsity. She was a fifth-place finisher at sectionals, sixth at the STAC meet and 51st at the state championships, the fourth highest finisher of any Section 4 runner at states.

All of that makes Devlin the newcomer of the year.

Corning coach Ray Lawson coached the Hawks to STAC and Section 4 titles and fourth at states and he is the coach of the year.
