VERONA — Notre Dame senior Piper Young wrapped up her Crusaders cross country career with a top 50 finish at the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School on Saturday.

Young finished 46th in the Class D girls race in 22:25.2.

Every year since eighth grade, with the exception of the Covid season when there was no state meet, Young finished her season up at states.

The Crusaders senior also earned the Sportsmanship Award for Section 4 in the class.

“I’m happy for Piper winning the Sportsmanship Award for Section 4,” Notre Dame coach Brett Shelton said. “This demonstrates her strength of character.”

On a muddy and wet course the Crusaders standout ran hard all race to finish up her successful Notre Dame career.

“The course was challenging and Piper left it all out there today,” Shelton said. “She gave 100% which is all we can ask for. Piper has had a wonderful career.

“Starting out making states as an eighth grader, then being part of a contending states team in the middle of her career, and finishing it out with individual success. We witnessed the growth of her as a leader and as someone that other athletes look up to. She will be missed.”
