TRAVEL SOFTBALL: HORSEHEADS' MORSE HELPS SMOKE TAKE FIFTH AT USSSA EASTERN NATIONALS (19 PHOTOS) (2022-08-04)

OCEAN CITY, MD. Horseheads’ Katie Morse helped the Southern Tier Smoke 18u finish fifth out of 43 teams at the USSSA Eastern Nationals.

The roster features Morse, Binghamton’s Trinity Trumbach; Sophia Colgan, Olivia Colgan, Josie Sure and Tanika Champlin of Johnson City; Chenango Valley’s Jessie Gates; Greene’s Rhea Malmquist; Vestal’s Mallory Duff; Kyla Good of Windsor; Susquehanna Valley’s Paige Weaver and Mallory Mummert of Athens.

In the first game of pool play the Smoke beat the Colorado Outlaws 13-1 in three innings. Morse and Mummert each hit two-run home runs. Weaver had a hit and scored three runs, Olivia Colgan had a two-run single, Sophia Colgan had two hits, with a two-run double and Malmquist had two hits and scored two runs.

Morse hit a two-run home run to put the Smoke up 2-0 two batters in the game. The team hit around in the second and third innings and scored six runs with two outs in the third. Duff struck out the side in the first and second and after leaving with an injury Olivia Colgan came in and struck out all three in the third.

In the second game of pool play the Smoke won 7-6 over the Express in three innings. Trumbach had two hits, with two RBI singles, and Mummert had a two-run double. Weaver had an RBI single and Good had two hits.

Mummert’s single Trumbach’s single drove in three runs with two outs in the first. The Express scored five in the third and had the tying run on first with one out, but Olivia Colgan struck out the next two to end the win.

In the third game, the winner’s bracket round of 32, the Smoke be a the Chester County Stars 7-4 in six innings.

Mummert had her second home run in three games and was 3-for-3 and Morse had a hit and two walks. Sophia Colgan had a hit and an RBI. Trumbach had a two-run single and Good had an RBI single.

Sophia Colgan’s single and Mummert’s home run came with two outs in the first to go up 3-0. Trumbach’s single came with two outs in the third. The team made no errors defensively.

In the fourth game, the winner’s bracket round of 16, the team beat the Valley Storm 5-1 in six innings. Mummert had her third home run in four games, a three-run blast, and she had a two-run single and went 3-for-3, making her 6-for-6 over the previous two games. Sophia Colgan walked twice and scored two runs.

All five runs were driven in by Mummert and all came with two outs, with a two-run single in the first and a three-run home run in the fifth. Malmquist had several putouts at third and Olivia Colgan struck out six on the mound.

In the winner’s bracket round of eight the team beat the NJ Raiders 5-0 in five innings.

Olivia Colgan threw a three-hitter with three strikeouts. Weaver had a two-run triple and Good had two hits.

All five runs came in the second inning and Weaver’s triple and Sophia Colgan’s RBI double were the big hits.

In the winner’s bracket same the team fell to the USSSA NY Pride Teal 6-0 in five innings.

Trumbach had a hit and the Pride Teal scored five runs in the second. Sophia Colgan relieved her sister and gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings. The Pride ended up winning the tournament 5-0 over the Central Region Reign to finish 9-0 for the week.

In the loser’s bracket semi the team fell to the Hudson Valley Hawks 12-5 in six innings.

Morse had three hits, with her second home run of the tournament, and an RBI single. Olivia Colgan had a two-run double.

The Smoke went up 5-0 before HV scored 12 runs in the sixth.
