WELLSVILLE — The Fury Fastpitch 08 14u out of Horseheads/Elmira won the championship at the Diamond Dawgs Invitational Tournament in Wellsville, N.Y. going 5-0 on the weekend.

The team allowed just three runs the entire tournament, overcoming injuries to starting infielders Ava Knowles (Addison) and Ellie French (Horseheads).

The team won the final 10-2 behind staunch defense and strong hitting with Baylee Williams (Syracuse), Kendall Curreri (Corning), Jill Holmes (Spencer), Caitlin Yearick (Horseheads) and Hayden Robertson (Corning) registered multi-hits in the game. Robertson also led the team with two RBI and three runs scored in the final.

Maddie Bailey (Pa.) provided great defense behind the plate with multiple putouts and a pickoff of a steal attempt at second base for a timely out to help secure the win.

On the weekend Curreri, Robertson, Williams, Holmes, Yearick and Anna Lee (Pa.) all hit over .500. Robertson led the team with nine runs scored. Holmes was the leader in RBI with nine and Lee led with six stolen bases.

On the mound Anya Beres led Corning with a 2-0 record and 10 strikeouts against just two walks. She also led the team with a .78 ERA while allowing only one run the entire weekend. Olivia Gee (Pa.) went 2-0 from the mound with seven strikeouts and four walks and a .88 ERA. Madison Smith (Elmira) had a strong pitching showing with a one-hit shutout in pool play, striking out seven.

The team finishes 24-9 on the year, reaching the final or semifinal in five of six tournaments.
