LOCALS COMPETE AT NYS JUNIOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS, CORNING'S CHEN CARDS HOLE-IN-ONE (19 PHOTOS) (2022-07-26)

HORSEHEADS — Five locals competed during day one of the New York State Junior Golf Championships at Soaring Eagles Golf Course on Tuesday.

Two Corning Painted-Post athletes competed in the 59th Girls’ Junior Golf Championship (18u), while two from CPP and one Horseheads graduate competed in the 80th NYS Boys’ Junior Golf Championship (15-18 years-old).

For the girls recent Corning grad Lucia Chen is tied for 14th after shooting a seven-over 78 on Tuesday.

Chen had a hole in one on the sixth hole to highlight her day.

Delaney Abel, who will only be in seventh grade at Corning next year, is in 28th place after an 89 (+18). Abel is one of only two Class of 2028 players in the field, no one younger is in the field on the girls’ side.

Sophia Li of New York City and Madison Chen of Manhasset are tied for the lead at 71.

For the boys’ Horseheads’ Zachary Locke, who plays at Division II Southern Wesleyan University, shot a round of 83 (+12) and is sitting in a tie for 63rd place. Locke shot 45 on the front nine, but had a strong back-nine where he shot 38.

Corning’s Will Davis is tied for 67th after shooting an 85 (+14) and Luca Neally of Corning is 73rd after shooting a 90 (+19).

Jacob Dantonio of Lancaster leads after shooting a 2-under 69.

Dan Young of Syracuse leads the 14u tournament and had the low score of all golfers in all age groups on the day with a 67.

Locke tees off at 8:50 a.m. on the back nine Wednesday and Neally tees of at 9:20 a.m. on the back nine, while Davis tees off at 9 a.m. on the back nine.

Chen tees off on the front nine at 1:40 p.m. and Abel tees off on 10 at 2 p.m.
