Southern Tier Sports Report
The Horseheads boys’ lacrosse team faced some of the best teams in the country at the National High School Lacrosse Showcase this week.

The showcase is the top high school event in the country and the finals are on ESPN tonight. Horseheads was able to beat a national power on day one.

Horseheads had an 8-7 win over Culver Academy (In.) 2025/2026. Garrett Elston scored the game winner and he was named to the all-tournament team.

“Garrett was huge for us at midfield on offense, defense and facing off when needed,” Horseheads coach Jason Neubauer said. “He always made a play for the team when we needed one. It’s great he is getting recognized for his effort.”

There were 45 schools in the showcase from 16 different states. Horseheads was one of six New York State schools competing (with Canandaigua, Victor, Baldwinsville, Garden City and West Genesee).

Along with Culver Academy the locals also faced perennial prep school powers — Loyola Blakefield (Md.), Bullis (Md.), who is playing in the final, and Wheaton Academy (Il.) The last game of the day was a matchup with New York State, Class B Champion Garden City.

21 boys from Horseheads competed in the event. The boys registered with the showcase and were placed on a team with the boys from their hometown. The Horseheads staff went down to coach the team in the event.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the kids for challenging themselves against the best competition in the country,” Neubauer said. “You have to play the best to get better, and I’m confident we got better as a group at this event.”
