YOUTH SOCCER (13U): BC UNITED GOES UNBEATEN IN POOL PLAY, EDGED IN REGIONAL SEMIS (17 PHOTOS) (2022-07-01)

Southern Tier Sports Report
DUNBAR, W.Va. — Nationally-ranked Coppermine ’09 Premier scored 12 minutes into the game, and made it stand for a 1-0 win over BC United here Tuesday in the semifinals of the 13U US Youth Soccer Eastern Regional Championships at the Shawnee Sports Complex.

The BC United team features Notre Dame’s Mary Katherine Young and Horseheads’ Ashley Giammichele along with four Valley girls — Waverly’s Lauren Gorsline, Sierra Lunsford, and Makenzie Olmsted, and Athens’ Delanie Patton, and Owego’s Ashlyn Dalton and Candor’s Meredith Stouffer.

Dalton and Kingsbury both got off shots in the first five minutes, but neither found the back of the net.

Most of the first 10 minutes was a back-and-forth affair with the ball in one defensive end or the other, and not much time in the midfield.

At the 11-minute mark, Kingsbury fired off a shot from just outside the box, but it sailed wide right.

About a minute later, Coppermine puts a long ball off the back of the head of a BC defender. It took an odd hop, and spun out of keepers reach and in for the first — and only — goal of the game.

Jocelyn Turshman and Kingsbury each got off shots later in the first half, but again didn’t penetrate past the keeper.

Five minutes into the second half, Dalton fired a pass across the box to Olmsted, but the Coppermine keeper made a diving stop of Olmsted’s shot to preserve the lead.

Coppermine took control of the game late, dominating possession, and slowing the pace of the game.

With a minute remaining, Dalton crossed a pass to Olmsted, but again the Coppermine keeper came up with the save.

Pool Play
BC United 3, Sporting CT 0
BC United wrapped up pool play at 3-0, with a 3-0 win over Sporting CT, and advanced to the 13U semifinals of the US Youth Soccer Eastern Regional Championships.

Dalton put BC United on the board about three minutes into the game with a shot from the left side of the box.

At the 10-minute mark, Gorsline blasted a shot over the crossbar.

BC controlled the first half, rotating players freely. They kept the ball at midfield or forward for most of the game.  CT managed only two shots, neither one a serious threat, but the United squad led just 1-0 at the half.

Three minutes into the second half, Dalton launched a ball deep into the box, and Shannon Kingsbury headed it past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Kingsbury returned the favor, passing the ball into the box for Dalton to score on a touch with less than 10 minutes to go in the game.
