THE SPORTS REPORTS: TOWANDA'S RYCK, CORNING'S PENG NAMED ALL-REGION "TENNIS PLAYERS OF YEAR," GIRLS, BOYS TOP NEWCOMERS, COACHES ALSO HONORED (June 29, 2022)
The Sports Reports Towanda’s Hannah Ryck completed a second
consecutive unbeaten regular season and gave a state place-winner a
battle in the District 4 Class 2A tournament before ending her high
school career as The Sports Reports’ Girls “Tennis Player of the Year.”
Corning’s Alex Peng is the Boys “Tennis Player of the Year.” (See below.)
Ryck
went 12-0 during the regular season, then competed at both singles and
doubles in district play. She dropped a three-set marathon to
semifinalist Avery DeFazio of Selinsgrove, in singles. In doubles, Ryck
teamed with Hannah Risch in a loss to Montgomery’s Mallorie Meyers and
Sammy Ulrich.
In her final two years for the Black Knights, Ryck went 19-0 in regular-season matches.
The “Newcomer of the Year” is Cowanesque Valley freshman Kylie Stone. She teamed with sophomore Laynie Labarron to go 4-1 as the Indians’ No. 2 doubles team.
Corning’s Tim Ball is the “Coach of the Year.”
He led the Hawks to a 7-3 overall record. Corning suffered its losses
against Southern Tier Athletic Conference and Section IV powerhouses
Ithaca and Union-Endicott. The Little Red were undefeated at 14-0 and
U-E was 12-4.

BOYS TENNIS Corning’s Alex Peng was unbeaten in four singles matches and went 7-4 at first doubles this season. The Sports Reports’ Boys Tennis “Player of the Year” teamed with Ethan Winsor to place fourth in Section IV Class A.
Three
of Peng’s and Winsor’s setbacks came against Ithaca standout David
Guan. He teamed with Eli Simons to down the Hawks duo in the semis
before winning the title. Guan teamed with a different partner to top
the Corning duo twice during the regular season.
Peng dropped just one set playing second and fourth while Winsor won his lone singles match.
The “Newcomer of the Year” is the doubles team of Connor Conklin and Nicholas Wandell. The Horseheads duo posted an 8-2 record at No. 3 doubles.
Edison’s Joe Condame is the “Coach of the Year.” He led the Spartans to an 8-1 record. Edison posted four shutouts and dropped just one set in four other matches.
