H.S. SOFTBALL: RIJO MAKES ALL-STATE FOR FOURTH TIME, NINE LOCALS RECOGNIZED (2022-06-25)

Atalyia Rijo was a firs-team all-state pick and Corning had four all-state softball selections to lead the way among area schools.

Notre Dame had three all-state selections and Horseheads had two players make all-state.

Rijo, who was recently named the Gatorade New York State Player of the year, was a first-team all-state selection in Class AA.

The Hawks shortstop, who will play Division I softball at Arkansas, and is now a four-time all-state selection. She hit .585 with seven home runs and led the region with 43 runs scored this year. She is the eighth-ranked recruit in the nation by Extra Innings.

Ellie DeRosa of Corning was a second-team selection in Class AA and in Class C Notre Dame’s Olivia Switzer was a second-team selection.

Horseheads’ Eva Koratsis was a third-team selection after leading the Blue Raiders to a sectional title and Kellie Zoerb of Corning was a fourth-team selection in Class AA, while Lawson Bigelow of Notre Dame was a fourth-team pick in Class C.

Kelsey Booker of Corning was a fifth-team selection in Class AA, while in Class C Ava Mustico of Notre Dame was a fifth-team pick.

Horseheads’ Molly Wolf was a sixth-team selection in Class AA.

Greene’s Olivia Kennedy, who no hit Notre Dame in the sectional final, was the Class C State Player of the Year. It’s Kennedy’s second straight year being named state player of the year.

Rijo, DeRosa, Wolf, Koratsis, Zoerb, Mustico, Switzer and Bigelow are all repeat members of the all-state team.

After making sixth-team all-state as an eighth grader, Rijo has made first team each of the past three seasons there was a team.
