HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING: AREA SWIMMERS DOMINATE AT WAVERLY INVITE; MCKANE HAS RECORD DAY FOR CORNING (2 PHOTOS) (2021-09-18)

WAVERLY — It was a dominant day for local swimmers at the Waverly Swimming and Diving Invitational.

Corning’s Angie McKane hit the state cut and set the meet and pool records in three different events, the 50 free (24.40), 100 fly (56.20), and 100 free (leading off the 400 free relay with a 53.36). The 100 free time also re-breaks the Corning team record.

Brooke Terwilliger broke the pool record and hit the state cut in diving with a 473.05.

The 200 and 400 free relays (McKane, Vanessa Turner, Kara Peters and Audra Hilker) also re-broke the Corning team records.

Diving was scored separately and Corning won the diving with Terwilliger winning, Allie Huff fourth, Nicole Gaskievicz was fifth and Sofia Sterbenk was sixth, out of 16 divers.

As a team Corning was second with 419 in swimming, behind Chenango Valley’s winning score of 437. Maine-Endwell was third at 392, Waverly was fourth at 218, followed by Elmira (203) and Notre Dame (108).

Elmira’s Lydia Barnes, Calli Overton, Gabrielle Mattoon and McKenna Malone was third in the 200 medley relay in 2:11.40.

Peters won the 200 free in 2:03.07 with teammate Camryn Hauptman eighth at 2:26.94.

Turner won the 200 IM in 2:16.60 and Hilker was fifth at 2:31.82, while Malone of Elmira was sixth (2:32.86), followed by Caitlyn Bain of Corning (2:36.77).

Int the 50 free along with the McKane win, teammates Carolyn Heckle (28.20) and Kyra Gross (28.46) were seventh and eighth, while Poppy Ruland was 10th in 28.93.

Along with McKane’s win in the 100 fly Elmira’s Overton was eighth at 1:18.49, followed by teammate Madelyn Cavalier (1:18.99).

Hilker was second in the 100 free in 59.67, followed by Malone of Elmira (1:00.08). Heckle was fifth for Corning (1:01.84), followed by Gross (1:02.16), while Ruland was eighth (1:02.79).

Turner won the 500 free in 5:26.06, followed by teammates Peters (5:33.28) and Bain (5:59.51).

Corning’s 200 free relay won with their team record time of 1:43.53 and the 400 free relay won with a record time of 3:45.62. Elmira’s Ava Sherman, Barnes, Overton and Malone were third in the 400 free relay in 4:20.50.

Notre Dame’s Allie O’Brien was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.94 and Barnes was fifth for Elmira in 1:12.39, while Huff was seventh in 1:16.11, while Madelyn Cavalier of Elmira was 10th in 1:18.19.

Mattoon of Elmira was fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.06 and Hauptman was eighth in 1:24.87, while Violet Daly of Notre Dame was 10th in 1:28.10.
