SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT: GRIMALDI HEADLINES ALL-STSR BOYS' NEWCOMERS OF THE SPRING (2022-06-18)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportThere were a lot of good performances by newcomers this sports season, and picking the best of the spring wasn’t easy.
In the end we have seven newcomers that make up the Super Seven All-Southern Tier Sports Report Boys’ Newcomers of the Spring.
We will list four of the newcomers, in no particular order, and then count down the final three as the second runner-up, the runner-up and the newcomer of the spring.
Nicholas Wandell, Horseheads, tennisThe newcomers of the year for boys tennis this year, Wandell was part of a doubles team with Connor Conklin. The two Horseheads tennis players went 8-2 as a doubles team in both of their first years on varsity.
Connor Conklin, Horseheads, tennis The newcomers of the year for boys tennis this year, Conklin was part of a doubles team with Nicholas Wandell. The two Horseheads tennis players went 8-2 as a doubles team in both of their first years on varsity.
Brody Liddy, Horseheads, baseballA key member of the Horseheads baseball team that won the STAC West, STAC titles and Section 4 crown. He was an all-rookie team selection on the All-STSR baseball team.
Zuri Ruffin, Corning, T&F Zuri Ruffin was the newcomer of the year for the All-STSR track and field team. He qualified for nationals as a freshman in the long jump and took sixth at freshman nationals at 20-feet, 11 1/4-inches. Was second to his brother in the 200 in the STAC West throughout the year.
SECOND RUNNER-UP
Nate Gillette, Horseheads, boys’ golf Nate Gillette had a strong season for the Blue Raiders, averaging 44.5 per round and he was the newcomer of the year for the All-STSR boys’ golf team. Gillette was a key member of the lineup for he Blue Raiders all season long.
RUNNER-UP
Gavin Hardee, Corning, baseballCorning’s Gavin Hardee was the All-STSR baseball newcomer of the year. He had three wins and two saves on the year, with a impressive .58 ERA in 19 innings, striking out 24 for the Hawks.
NEWCOMER OF THE SPRING
Chris Grimaldi, Corning, Boys’ lacrosseOne of the area’s best boys’ lacrosse players this year, was also a varsity newcomer.
Corning’s Chris Grimaldi scored 57 goals and added 27 assists this year and he was the boys’ lacrosse all-STSR newcomer of the year and now he is the overall STSR newcomer of the Spring.
Grimaldi led the area in goals and points this year and was a first-team All-STSR boys’ lacrosse all-star. Grimaldi is a junior, and a UMass commit.
