SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT: LIMONCELLI HEADLINES SUPER SEVEN COACHES OF THE SPRING (2022-06-18)

Southern Tier Sports Report
As we wrap up the sports year, it’s time to recognize the best coaches of the spring season with the All-Southern Tier Sports Report Super 7 Spring Coaches.

We will name four of the coaches in no particular order, and then count down the top three with the second runner-up, the runner-up and the coach of the spring.

Chris Hogue, Corning Boys’ lacrosse
The Hawks captured a Section 4 title this year. Hogue led the way for the Corning boys and he was the boys’ lacrosse All-STSR coach of the year.

Rick Gryska, Horseheads, softball
Horseheads rallied in the sectional final to top Corning and win the Section 4 crown. With that success Rick Gryska was the All-STSR coach of the year for softball.

Ed Browning, Horseheads, girls’ golf
After helping the Horseheads Blue Raiders go unbeaten in the regular season and win sectionals Horseheads coach Ed Browning was the All-STSR coach of the year for girls’ golf this year. Browning also helped the Horseheads boys finish second in the STAC meet this year and have a top 25 finisher at states.

Chris Clark, Corning, boys’ golf
The Corning Hawks won their first STAC title this season and coach Chris Clark was this year’s boys’ All-STSR coach of the year. Clark also coached the girls team to a runner-up finish at sectionals, and also qualified two girls for states, including a top 20 finisher at states.

SECOND RUNNER-UP
Joe Melanson & coaching staff, Corning, T&F

Corning coach Joe Melanson and the other Corning coaches are the second runner-ups. Melanson was the coach of the year for boys boys and girls track and field All-STSR teams. The Hawks won the STAC and Section 4, Class A team titles this year.

RUNNER-UP
Kevin Scanlon, Corning, girls’ lacrosse

Corning won their first sectional title since 2018, beating rival Ithaca in the final and coach Kevin Scanlon was the girls’ lacrosse All-STSR Coach of the Year.

COACH OF THE SPRING
Jeff Limoncelli, Horseheads, baseball

Limoncelli led the Blue Raiders to a remarkable season. They went to Myrtle Beach, faced some of the best teams in the state and returned and never lost another game until regionals. After losing the second game of the season to Corning the Blue Raiders never lost another game in Section 4 all year, and they won the STAC West Division title, the STAC Championship and the Section 4 Championship. He was the All-STSR baseball coach of the year.
