SOUTHERN TIER SPORTS REPORT: GREGORSKI HEADLINES ALL-STSR BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD ALL STARS (2022-06-17)

There was little Jack Gregorski didn’t do this year, and this track and field season, and he was the clear choice for the first All-Southern Tier Sports Report Track and Field team.

Gregorski is the overall track and field athlete of the year. He was the NYSPHSAA champion in the 3200 with a new Section 4 record of 8:53.92.

Gregorski anchored the Hawks’ 4x800 relay that won the Federation title in 7:49.70. Gregorski ran a 1:55.48 leg as the anchor in the relay.

Gregorski also set a school record in winning the state qualifiers in the 1600 with a time of 4:12.80.

In the 5000 meters Gregorski finished third in the nation.

Corning’s John Hursh qualified for states in both the shot put and the discus and he is the field athlete of the year.

Hursh threw 138-feet, 9-inches in the discus and 44-feet, 8-inches in the shot put at the state qualifiers to win Division I in both.

Corning’s Ashton Bange was part of the Hawks 4x800, running a 1:56.89 leg of the relay. He was sixth in Division I and seventh in the federation in the 1600, running 4:14.78.

Corning’s Bange, Gregorski, Tevin McLaren and Gabe Cornfield won the 3200 federation title in 7:49.70 and they are the relay of the year. Gregorski ran a 1:55.48 leg, Bange ran 1:56.89, Cornfield ran 1:58.59 and McLaren ran a 1:58.76 leg.

Zuri Ruffin is the newcomer of the year. He qualified for nationals as a freshman in the long jump and took sixth at freshman nationals at 20-feet, 11 1/4-inches. Was second to his brother in the 200 in the STAC West throughout the year.

Joe Melanson and the Corning coaching were the coaching staff of the year. The Hawks won the STAC and Section 4 Class titles this year.

FIRST TEAM
Jack Gregorski, Corning (NYSPHSAA State Champion in the 3200. Federation champion in the 4x800 relay in 7:49.70. Section 4 record in the 3200 meters in 8:53.92. Corning school record, sectional champion in the 1600 in 4:12.80. Third at New Balance Nationals in the 5000 meters. Ran a 1:55.48 leg of the 800 in the 4x800 relay).

Ashton Bange, Corning (State medalist in the 1600 meters, taking sixth in D1 and 7th in Federation in 4:14.78. Federation champion in the 4x800 relay in 7:49.70. Ran a 1:56.89 leg of the 800 in the 4x800 relay).

Gabe Cornfield, Corning (Federation champion in the 3200 relay. Also a state qualifier in the 1600 relay for the Hawks (3:25.42 to win sectionals. In the 3200 relay he ran a 1:58.59 in his leg of the relay).

DJ Cornfield, Corning (State qualifier in the steeplechase, also a national qualifier in the event).

Gyassi Ruffin, Corning (State qualifier in the 400 meters (50.16 to win sectionals) and 4x400 meters (3:25.42 to win sectionals), was top ranked in 200 in STAC West).

Tevin McLaren, Corning
(Federation champion in the 3200 relay. Ran a 1:58.76 leg as part of the state championship relay).

Noah Puffer, Horseheads
(Champion in the pentathlon at the state qualifiers with a time of 2,905. State qualifier in the pentathlon).

Axl Andrus, Horseheads
(STAC Champion in the 800 meters. Ran top open 800 time in Section 4 on the year with a 1:56.66, second at the state qualifier in 1:59.24).

John Hursh, Corning (State qualifier in the discus and shot put threw 138-9 at the state qualifier in the discus Threw 44-8 in the shot at the state qualifier, winning D1 in both).

Tyler Simpson, Notre Dame (State qualifier in the 1600 meters. Won D2 state qualifier in the 1600 in 4:30.87. Second in D2 at the state qualifier in 2:00.37 in the 800. Ran 4:27.90 a PR at the state meet in the 1600 meters).

Matt Gensel, Corning
(State qualifier in the 3200 meters. Finished 16th overall in the race in 9:26.59. Winner of the 3200 at the state qualifier).

SECOND TEAM
Zuri Ruffin, Corning
(Qualified for nationals as a freshman in the long jump. Took sixth at freshman nationals in the LJ at 20-feet, 11 1/4-inches. Was second to his brother, Gyassi, in the 200 in the STAC West).

Hugo Mazzali, Corning
(Leader in STAC West in 400 hurdles and TJ. Jumped 41-2 1/2 to take third in D1 at the state qualifier).

Brady Hughes, Corning (Leading point getter at sectionals for the Hawks with 32 points. STAC West leader in 110 hurdles and high jump. 4th in the pentathlon at state qualifiers at 2,684 points. High jump of 5-10 this year and long jump of 19-10. Third in pole vault at STAC meet, 10-6).

Seth Wilsoncroft, Horseheads (STAC Champion in the 4x400 relay in 3:30.90. 2nd at the state qualifier. Top 200 time in 23.44).

Ace Andrus, Horseheads
(STAC Champion in the 4x400 relay in 3:30.90.  2nd at the state qualifier. Top 800 time in 2:03.54).

Bradock Salisbury, Horseheads (STAC Champion in the 4x400 relay in 3:30.90.  2nd at the state qualifier.  Top 400 time of 52.79).

Ben Allen, Elmira (Took fourth at the state qualifier in the 3200 meters in a time of 9:55.27).

Derek Simpson, Notre Dame (Took third in Division 2 at the state qualifier in the 3200 meters in 10:09.77 and he took third in D2 at the state qualifier in the 1600.

Cody Lucero, Edison (Finished third in the 200 (23.51) and fourth in the 100 (11.66) at the Class sectional meet. He was second in the 100 at the IAC meet and the 200.

(Finished third in the IAC meet in the 400 hurdles and qualified for the state qualifying meet.
