NYSPHSAA GIRLS' LACROSSE: HORSEHEADS FALLS IN REGIONAL FINAL (18 PHOTOS) (June 5, 2022)
By Jackson Lawrence Southern Tier Sports Report ITHACA– The New York state regional round is a stage in the state playoffs is something that is nothing new to the Horseheads girls lacrosse team. However, for a fifth straight year, they ran into a buzzsaw against the Section III champion.
This year was no different, as they were defeated by Fayetteville-Manlius for a third straight time in the regional round. This time it came in a 19-5 defeat at the hands of Johns Hopkins commit Ava Angello who poured in six goals for the Hornets.
Though the result might have seemed lopsided, the Blue Raiders did a good job of keeping themselves in the game early as they took advantage of their free position shots.
Brooke Sumner was the driving force of that as she tied the game up twice in the first 10 minutes. Once at 1-1, and the second time to tie it up at three as their first three goals all came from free shots, including four coming from that mark out of their five in the contest.
After that, it was all Hornets as they scored the next 11 goals before the Blue Raiders would knock one more in to make the score 14-4 at the half.
The Hornets were able to wind down the clock in the second half as the running clock rule was into effect. Horseheads scored one more goal but fell to F-M who now moves on to the state semifinals at Cortland on Friday against Section V champion Victor.
Leading the Blue Raiders in goals was Sumner who finished with three, while Erin Christmas and Alexis Krohmahey each added a score. Sydney Rose had an assist on the day for Horseheads.
Angello’s six goals for the Hornets was followed by five goals and three assists from Julianna Cogliandro.
