ON TAP TODAY: CORNING HOSTS HORSEHEADS BASEBALL FOR A DIVISION TITLE TO HIGHLIGHT THE DAY'S ACTION (2022-05-11)

Southern Tier Sports Report
There is another game to decide a division title in baseball today to highlight the day of local sports.

The Corning baseball team hosts Horseheads today for the STAC West crown in a one-game playoff.

A lot of the rest of the action tonight is all on the road including the class sectional tennis for Corning and Horseheads.

Here’s a look at today’s games.

BASEBALL
HORSEHEADS AT CORNING, 5 P.M.

The one-game playoff decides the STAC West title. Corning won the first matchup between the two teams this year, the first game of the year for the Blue Raiders and second for the Hawks. The Blue Raiders won last week’s game.

EDISON AT GROTON, 4:30 P.M.
The Spartans are coming off a win over Moravia as they hit the road.

ELMIRA AT BINGHAMTON, 5 P.M.
The Express picked up a win at Ithaca yesterday and they hit the road today for a STAC matchup.

TENNIS
CORNING, HORSEHEADS AT CLASS SECTIONALS AT UNION-ENDICOTT, 9 A.M.

The all-day event is at Ann McGuiness Elementary school at Union-Endicott. The top three finishers head to the state qualifiers in Binghamton on May 20-21. Corning’s Ethan Winsor and Alex Peng are seeded second in doubles. They have a bye into the quarters. Horseheads has a team of Javed Sulemaun and Jack Maker who will open with Corning’s Deins Khrapko and Neil Reddy. Horseheads’ second pairing is James Haberstoh and Julian Bostwick, who open with Rohan Bajwa and Owen Moretin with the winner facing Winsor and Peng. In singles Corning’s Nathan Sheng is the third seed. He has a bye in the opening round. Corning’s other player is Anthony Mendoza, who opens with Nathan Zhou of Horseheads, while Horsheads also has Joey Veres, who opens with Lyndon Hess of Ithaca, with the winner facing Sheng.

SOFTBALL
NOTRE DAME AT NEWARK VALLEY, 5 P.M.

The Crusaders have won six straight and they hit the road for a game prior to heading to the IAC title game.

EDISON AT NEWFIELD, 5:15 P.M.
The Spartans take to the road for a game. They are coming off a win over SVE on Tuesday.

CORNING AT WELLSVILLE, 6 P.M.

The Hawks take to the road for a non-league game.

ELMIRA AT BINGHAMTON, 5 P.M.
The Express take to the road for a STAC matchup. Elmira is coming off a loss to Corning.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE
MAINE-ENDWELL AT ELMIRA, 5 P.M.

The Express play host to Maine-Endwell in a girls’ lacrosse matchup.

CORNING, ELMIRA AT NEED FOR SPEED INVITATIONAL AT JOHNSON CITY, 5 P.M.
The Hawks and Express hit the road for a mid-week track and field invite.
