H.S. BASEBALL: FAST START HELPS CORNING TOP ELMIRA TO SET UP ONE GAME DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF AGAINST HORSEHEADS (May 9, 2022)
Southern Tier Sports Report ELMIRA — The Corning baseball team scored seven second-inning runs as they beat Elmira 13-2 on Monday to set up a one-game playoff for STAC West title.
With the win, and Horseheads’ win over Ithaca, the Hawks will host the Blue Raiders on Wednesday to decide the division title.
“Tonight was a good win,” Corning coach Eric Kizis said. “The guys knew that it was a must win to get another shot to play Horseheads for a league championship. Our hitters were aggressive and came out of the gate scoring runs.
“Elmira has a good lineup and I thought our pitching staff did a nice job of limiting hits. I love when we get to this time of the season and we are playing to keep playing, back’s against the wall a bit. I’m proud of how we bounced back from last week’s loss (to Horseheads). We are happy to get the tie-breaker game Wednesday against Horseheads.”
Aidan Chamberlin had a four-hit game for Corning, with a double, three runs scored and two RBI.
Landen Burch, Carter Rosno and Jack VAnWoert all had two hits in the game, all of them getting a double among their two hits. Burch scored a run and had two RBI and Rosno scored two runs, while VanWoert had two RBI and two runs scored.
Henry Jackson, Grayson Saltzer, Will Kibler, Trent Hackett and Zack Nelson all had hits for the Hawks in the game.
Jackson and Saltzer each had an RBI, while Kibler scored two runs. Hackett had an RBI and scored two runs and Nelson had an RBI.
Mason Smith had an RBI in the game and Parker Castle scored a run.
Burch went one inning on the mound, striking out one and allowing no hits. VanWoert went three innings, striking out two and allowing four hits. Hardee went two innings, striking out three and allowing no hits and Kibler went one inning, striking out two and allowing no hits.
Elmira got two hits from Jack Carozzoni, who had an RBI and No. 8 and Da’mon Jackson had hits in the game. Jack Cavalier had an RBI and Mike Palmer and Jackson had runs in the game.
Brendan Stowell went 1 1/3 innings, striking out one and allowing four hits and Jack Stemerman went five innings, striking out two and allowing 10 hits, while Trevor Morrell got two outs, both by strikeouts, and allowing one hit. ——— STSR FILE PHOTO
