SECTION 4 T&F: DOMINANT CORNING QUALIFIES 29 ATHLETES FOR THE STATE MEET (24 PHOTOS) (February 21, 2022)Southern Tier Sports ReportCORTLAND — For most teams when it comes to making states they hope an athlete or two may make it.
For the Corning Hawks they’ll need a bus, maybe more, to bring all their state qualifiers.
Corning had five different relays make states. For the girls all three relays made it with the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 qualifying. For the boys the 4x400 and 4x800 made states.
They also had athletes qualify for states in 17 different individual events as 29 athletes for the Hawks will make the trip to states.
The Corning boys won the title with 174 points with Ithaca second at 87. For the girls the Hawks won with 235 points, and Horseheads was second at 81.
For the girls Atalyia Rijo, Maddy Gill, Cassandra Howard and Sophia ReSue won the 4x200 in 1:52.84.
In the 1600 relay Megan Kirk, Ella Grinnell, Madison Olson and Lauren Gerow won in 4:34.83 and Sarah Lawson, Julia Hluck, Sadie Beres and Faithe Ketchum won the 3200 relay in 10:33.92.
Gyasi Ruffin, Lennart Jensen, Hector Mayolet and Micah Cornfield won the 1600 relay for the boys in 3:41.48 and Jack Gregorski, Gabe Cornfield, Tevin McLaren and Ashton Bange won the 3200 relay in 8:35.88.
Ashton Bange won the 1600 in 4:29.51 to make states.
Corning has three state qualifiers in the 3200. Matt Gensel won in 9:59.41 and Nathan Webb was runner-up in 10:07.06. Gregorski makes it as the third-place finisher after hitting the state time with a 10:07.27.
Micah Cornfield took second in the 300 to make states in 36.73.
Gabe Cornfield was third in the 1000 in 2:40.26. He qualified to run the intersectional relay at states, but will focus on the relay instead.
Corning went 1-2-3 in the shot, with the top two making states. John Hursh won at 46-feet, 9 1/2-inches followed by Chris Mechalke at 43-feet, 10-inches. Robert Ohl was third at 42-feet, 11-inches.
For the girls Rijo made states with a second-place finish in the 55 in 7.73. Gerow made states with a runner-up finish in the 600 in 1:42.94.
Ketchum was runner-up in the 1000 to make states in 3:07.42.
Lawson won the 3000 to make states in the event in 10:24.97.
Sophia Polzella was second in the 55 hurdles to make states in 9.95.
ReSue won the high jump at 5-feet to make states.
Gill took second in the triple jump to qualify for states at 35-feet, 6 1/4-inches.
Sofia Scouten won the 1500 race walk in 8:09.74 followed by Cassandra Collins in 8:45.40 as both made states.
Cabe Hogue won the weight throw at 51-feet, 6-inches to make states. Elyssa DeRosa won the girls' weight throw at 46-feet, 10 3/4-inches to make states.
Other athletes for Corning to place in the top 10 in races include Ruffin taking fifth in the 300 in 38.10. Mayolet was fifth in the 600 in 1:32.78 followed by Jensen (1:33.48).
McLaren took fifth in the 1000 in 2:41.81 and DJ Cornfield took sixth in 2:51.72.
Joshua Beres was fourth in the 1600 in 4:46.07 and Jaxyn Mahoney took sixth in 4:54.23.
Brady Hughes was fourth in the 55 hurdles in 9.29 and Dylan Rose took seventh in 9.43.
Gavin Gonzalez was fourth in the high jump at 5-feet, 6-inches and Hugo Mazzali was 10th in the long jump at 17-feet, 2 1/2-inches and fourth in the triple jump at 37-feet, 11 1/2-inches and DJ Cornfield was ninth at 35-feet, 2-inches.
Hughes took fifth in the pole vault at 9-feet, 6-inches.
ReSue was eighth in the 55 in 7.90. Howard took fifth in the 300 in 45.82 and Kirk was fourth in the 600 in 1:49.84 while Grinnell was sixth in 1:53.33.
Sadie Beres was sixth in the 1000 in 3:21.64 and in the 1500 Olivia Murch was 10th in 5:58.43.
Meghan McLaughlin was fourth in the 3000 in 12:18.81 followed by Lauren Roche in 12:29.67.
Gwen Zimmerman was eighth and Abby Reppert ninth for Corning both at 4-feet, 4-inches in the high jump.
Polzella was sixth in the long jump at 14-feet, 8 1/2-inches. Farrand was seventh in the pole vault at 7 feet.
Elyssa DeRosa was fifth in the shot put at 30-feet, 1-inch. Lillian Farrand was sixth in the 55 hurdles in 10.08.
