NONLEAGUE SOCCER: HORSEHEADS OPENS NEW STADIUM WITH WIN OVER ATHENS (24 PHOTOS) (2021-09-12)
Southern Tier Sports Report HORSEHEADS — The Blue Raiders scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to top Athens in Horseheads first soccer game in their new stadium.
Facing a strong team from Pennsylvania, the Blue Raiders got a first half goal by Trevor Howard off an assist by Jimmy Haberstroh and in the second half Haberstroh scored for Horseheads to cap the scoring.
Haberstroh's goal was a 35-yard direct kick. Athens goalie made a diving grab on the ball, but it slid past him and into the net.
Horseheads had eight shots and two corner kicks in the game, while Athens had three shots and two corner kicks.
Carson Smith made three saves in net for the Blue Raiders in the game.
It was the second of three big opening nights for the new Horseheads stadium. The football team kicked off the stadium Friday, the boys’ soccer team kicked it off with this game and the girls get their first game in the stadium when they host Corning on Monday.
