ELMIRA — A 20-8 edge in the first quarter proved to be the difference on Friday as Maine-Endwell topped Elmira in boys’ basketball action, 66-54.

The Express got out to a fast start, leading 8-3 after one quarter, but Maine-Endwell came roaring back with a 17-0 run to end the opening quarter.

The Spartans outscored Elmira 20-15 in the second quarter to lead 40-23 at the half. Elmira outscored the Spartans 31-26 in the second half, but they weren’t able to come all the way back.

Mikey Middaugh led Elmira with 18 points in the game, with 10 points coming in the first half.

Seth Myles and Chris Woodard each had eight points in the game. Woodard went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the second quarter of the game, while Myles went 4-for-5 at the line.

Johnnie Garcia finished with five points for Elmira and Da’mon Jackson had four points, all in the third quarter.

Xavier Jones, Phil Nierstedt and Tyre Daniel had three points each in the game and Kobe Thomas finished with two points.

While free throw shooting hurt the Express in losses to Horseheads and Corning, they had a strong game at the line on Friday, going 17-for-23 from the stripe.

Dom L’Amoreaux had 28 points, with four threes, for the Spartans in the game and Connor Green had 12 points, while Mike Mancini finished with 11 points.

L’Amoreaux had 11 of the Spartans 20 first quarter points in the win.
