IAC BOYS' BASKETBALL: EDISON BOYS TURN UP THE DEFENSE TO NOTCH FIRST WIN (2022-01-11)

ELMIRA HEIGHTS — The Edison boys’ basketball team used a dominant defensive effort in the second half, and balanced scoring to pick up their first win of the year on Tuesday, beating Odessa-Montour 56-39.

The Spartans held O-M to 14 second-half points in the win after Odessa led 25-22 at the break.

Edison outscored O-M 15-5 in the third quarter to take the lead and outscored them 19-9 in the fourth to get the win.

Edison had three players score in double figures, led by Garret Mortimer with 17 points. Dylan Swartood had 14 for the Spartans and Tyler Belloma finished with 11 points.

George Smith had seven points in the game and Blake Cobb had four, while Evan Bush finished with three points.

Belloma was 8-for-9 from the free throw line in the second half and Mortimer had eight points, with two threes, in the fourth quarter, while Belloma had seven points, with a three and four free throws in the final quarter.

Swartwood had two threes in the first half and four points in both the theird and fourth quarters.

“Tonight was a nice win,” Edison coach Lenny Smith said. “I am hoping to continue to improve our shooting and defense and be competitive the last half of the year.”
