EIGHT-MAN FOOTBALL: EDISON OPENS THE YEAR AT NEWFIELD (2021-09-08)

NEWFIELD — It’s time for some Friday Night Lights, or make that Wednesday afternoon lights, as Edison football kicks off the season today.

For Edison they had a scrimmage this weekend, and now quickly they are on the field to begin their season on the road at Newfield.

“This midweek game has made it very difficult to prepare,” Edison coach Kyle Erickson said. “We just had our scrimmage on Saturday and then only had two practices until our first game. It doesn’t allow for much preparation.”

Despite the mid-week matchup, the kids are ready, and excited, for some football in the fall after a shortened spring season a year ago.

“The kids are excited,” Erickson said. “They’ve put in a lot of hard work and are prepared for the upcoming season.

“I believe the kids are excited to be playing football back where it belongs. The recent weather has it feeling like football weather, and with school just opening up, it feels like the right time of year.”

The Spartans know they face a test against Newfield.

“Newfield was a very good team in the Spring, and I believe they’ve graduated quite a few,” Erickson said. “But, they still seem to be pretty talented from watching them on film. They’re very big and powerful.”

WHEN EDISON HAS THE BALL:
Offensively it’s the fundamentals that matter most for the Spartans as they head into the game.

Edison knows running the ball, and not committing turnovers will be a big key to their offensive success against Newfield.

“Offensively, we need to be able to run the football,” Erickson said. “We need to be able to attack the seems and edges to be successful and control the game. And, we need to cover the football and not have any costly turnovers.”

WHEN NEWFIELD HAS THE BALL:
Newfield has a size advantage against the Spartans, but what Edison has is speed, and they know they need to use that on defense.

“Defensively, we need to be aggressive,” Erickson said. “We are small compared to Newfield. We need to take advantage of our speed and play aggressively downhill.”
