ELMIRA HEIGHTS — The Edison girls’ soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over Notre Dame on Thursday night, the first win in program history over the Crusaders.
“A great result for not just this team, but our growing program as a whole,” Edison coach Kevin Weber said. “We came in with a game plan we thought we could limit their talented attack, while still allowing us to find space and opportunities forward of our own. The girls did a great job implementing those tactics within their play, while also being able to adapt as the game progressed.
“Very proud of our resiliency after their goal. In a situation that would have been easy to allow doubts and frustration to set in, they battled their way back into the game and came away with the well-earned win.”
After a scoreless first half Notre Dame struck first at 45:42 of the second half when MK Young headed in a corner off a cross from Emily Coseo.
Aurora Parlo tied the game for Edison at 69:31 off an assist from Eliza Crandall and at 73:44 Paige Vaughn scored the game winner off a Crandall assist.
“Extremely proud with the effort we gave today,” Crandall said. “It shows the hard work we put in over the past few years is starting to pay off. After going down 1-0, we kept our heads up and fought even harder.
“We have to give credit to coach Weber for coming up with a great game plan and keeping us focused prior to the match.”
Edison had 12 shots and six corner kicks and Notre Dame had six shots and five corner kicks.
Kaylynn Tarby had five saves in goal for Edison and Liz Young had 10 saves for the Crusaders.
“I’m extremely proud of the team’s effort tonight,” Tarby said. “Everybody on the team put all of their energy into the game from start to finish. The defense was on point, especially holding off all the great players on Notre Dame.
“The whole game was electric and I can’t wait to see how this huge win gives us the motivation to push forward and hopefully get some more wins the last couple of games.”
For Edison’s players the win is special.
“It’s a really special accomplishment for our program, and I’m proud of everyone who contributed to making history today” Mattee Brush said. “Notre Dame is a great team, so earning our first win over them means a lot.
“Going down 1-0 could have rattled us, but the team responds with composure, resilience and a lot of belief. I’m incredibly proud of the way we fought back, stayed together, and continued to compete until the final whistle.”
