Southern Tier Sports ReportCORNING — A 67-yard touchdown by Willie Walker was the difference as the Elmira football team topped Corning 14-8 on Friday night.
The win puts the Express ahead in the race for home field, and the bye in sectionals.
Elmira struck first with four seconds left in the first half on a six-yard touchdown run by Baby Harris. Ben Guyette hit the extra point and it was 7-0 Elmira at the half.
As time expired in the third quarter Keegan Kelly caught a 36-yard touchdown from Nathan Bretch and Kelly ran in the two-point try to put the Hawks up 8-7.
Walker had the 67-yard touchdown with 9:17 left in the game and Guyette hit the extra point to cap the scoring. Walker lined up at quarterback on the play and ran in for the winning score.
“Proud of our guys,” Elmira coach Jimmy McCauley said. “Total team effort. Took everyone.”
Walker ran for 86 yards on four carries and Ryan Goble ran for 44 yards on 14 carries for Elmira. Cole Swanson ran for 42 yards on six carries and Dominic Goetz had 23 yards on six carries while Harris ran for 15 yards on four carries.
John Graham ran for 57 yards on 15 carries and Casey Hale ran for 47 yards on 11 carries. Kelly had 27 yards on nine carries and Jay Richards ran for 24 yards on six carries.
Goble was 2-for-5 passing for 36 yards and Bretch was 2-for-7 for 31 yards.
Liam Ogden had a 20-yard catch for Elmira and Harris had a 10-yard catch, while Miah Miller Jr. had a six-yard catch.
Kelly had a 36-yard catch from Bretch and Johnston had a catch.
