Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA — On a rainy night the Corning boys’ soccer team came away with a 4-1 victory at Elmira on Wednesday night.
Cooper Sargent and James Goodman had goals for the Hawks. There were two own goals by Elmira as well. Manuel Mendoza had an assist in the game.
Chase Smith scored off a Lucas Ferandes assist for Elmira.
Corning had 11 shots and three corner kicks and Elmira had three shots and two corner kicks.
Ben Hufnagel had two saves in goal for Corning and Hunter Grant finished with six saves for the Express.
“Wet conditions created chaotic moments in play,” Corning coach Chad Freelove said. “I was really pleased with the improvement of our back four, especially given the conditions. It was difficult to settle in and build up play consistently.
“It was a hard fought match where I thought Elmira wanted it a little bit more than we did at the start. We were able to rebound. We’ll look for our veteran leadership to help lead with composure.”
