NYSPHSAA SOFTBALL: CORNING'S JOHNSTON NAMED STATE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, 5 LOCALS EARN ALL-STATE HONORS (2026-06-25)

Corning senior Matti Johnson capped his career as the Class AAA State Player of the Year, while a total of five local players earned all-state softball honors. 

Johnston was dominant on the mound, and at the plate, for the Corning Hawks as they reached the regional final. 

Johnston, who will play at D1 Albany next year, had a .84 ERA with 160 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. She was 17-1 on the year and allowed just 12 earned runs on the season.

At the plate Johnson hit .525 with a .623 on-base. She had 11 extra base hits, with four home runs and 23 RBI and 36 runs scored. 

Over her three years Johnston won three sectional titles, won a state title, two regional titles, made a state final four and a state quarterfinal. 

For her three-year varsity career Johnston had a 1.7 ERA with 374 strikeouts and a 39-8 record in 295 2/3 innings. Johnston has a .459 career batting average with a .588 on-base. She has 39 career extra base hits, with 12 home runs. In her career she has 59 RBI and 111 runs scored. 

Corning’s Lauren DeRosa was also a first-team all-state selection in AAA. After missing most of last year with an injury DeRosa came back this year and hit .458 with three home runs. 

Corning’s Hannah Kauffman made third-team all-state in her first year on varsity. She hit .382 with 19 RBI. 

Horseheads senior Caitlin Yearick was a second-team pick in Class AA. Yearick finished her career as the school’s all-time leader in home runs. She broke a 30-year-old mark set by Christina Kowalski in 1996. Yearick hit a pair of home runs, and a double, in the sectional final. 

Edison’s Aurora Parlo was a fourth-team pick in Class B. Parlo hit .403 this year with 14 RBI and 21 runs scored. Parlo was 4-2 on the mound with a .89 ERA in 39 innings, with 48 strikeouts.
