NYSPHSAA GIRLS' GOLF: ABEL TIED FOR 8TH AFTER FIRST DAY OF STATE GOLF (2026-06-07)

Southern Tier Sports Report
RUSH — Corning’s Delaney Abel is tied for eighth after the first day of the New York State girls’ golf championships at Wild Wood Country Club.

Abel, who was in the lead after day one a year ago, and finished third, shot a four-over 76 on Saturday.

Abel is two shots out of the top five. Rachel O’Rourke of Rome Free Academy is the leader at one-under. Hayden Knapp is even par. No other golfers are par or below.

Abel shot a 38 on both the front and the back nine on Sunday. She had three birdies on the day.

“Delaney dug deep today and kept herself in it,” Corning coach Chris Clark said. “By her standards she did not play well today. But, she did everything she had to do to keep herself in it and give herself a shot to make a run at the leaders tomorrow.

“Overall she didn’t play as well as she has been playing the last month, but she’s got a chance to do something special tomorrow, and I think she can pull it off.”

Abel tees off at 9 a.m. on Monday morning in the final round.
