Southern Tier Sports ReportCORNING — The Corning Hawks softball team moved to 8-0 on the year with a 9-2 win over Vestal in a matchup of top five ranked teams in the state.
The Hawks, ranked second in Class AAA, jumped out to an early lead in the win over No. 4 ranked in AA Vestal.
Matti Johnston got the win on the mound and she lead off the game with a home run for the Hawks, who also scored three in the fourth.
Johnston had two hits, with the home run, an RBI and two runs scored and she struck out nine and allowed five hits and two unearned runs.
Lauren DeRosa had three hits, with a triple and four runs scored and Mia Madden had two hits, with a double and two RBI.
Hannah Kauffmann had a hit and three RBI for the Hawks and Sophie Schoonover scored three runs.
