ITHACA — Behind a strong second half defensive effort, No. 4 Syracuse (10-3, 5-2 ACC) extended its winning streak to 10 games on Tuesday evening, earning a 10-8 win over Cornell (7-4, 2-1 Ivy League).

Corning graduate Ashlee Volpe had three assists in the win for Syracuse. Volpe assisted with 3:00 left in the first half on the fifth goal for the Orange, that cut the deficit to 6-5 at the time. Volpe assisted on the first two goals of the second half as Syracuse went up 8-6, and eventually 9-6.

The win was fueled by a strong showing from the defense in the second half in which the Orange surrendered just two goals. The defensive effort allowed the Orange to score five unanswered goals to pull ahead and put Cornell away. Coco Vandiver led the Orange with three caused turnovers

Molly Guzik led the way once again with four points on two goals and two assists. With the pair of goals, she extended her goal streak to 13 games. Caroline Trinkaus notched a hat trick in the win.

The Orange and Big Red traded blows in the opening frame, with Cornell striking first before Syracuse scored goals from Emma Muchnick and Alexa Vogelman. Cornell scored twice in just over one minute before Trinkaus scored to level things at 3-3 to end the first quarter.

Cornell stormed ahead with two quick goals in the second quarter. Trinkaus scored on a free position shot to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Cornell swiftly scored once more to open the lead back up to 6-4.

After the sixth Big Red goal, the Orange scored five unanswered goals over the course of the next 20 minutes, spanning the end of the second quarter and the duration of the third quarter. The run gave Syracuse a 9-6 edge.

It wasn't until the 7:24 mark of the fourth quarter that Cornell scored again, concluding a drought that lasted nearly 28 minutes. Trinkaus scored her third goal of the game minutes later to give the Orange a cushion. Cornell got one back in the final minute, but the Orange wrapped up the 10-8 win.

The Orange stay on the road this weekend when they travel to Durham, North Carolina to take on #17 Duke. The matchup with the Blue Devils is set for a 4 p.m. start on Saturday, April 4 and air on ACC Network.
