ELMIRA — Horseheads scored six runs in the first two innings on their way to a season-opening 9-5 win over Elmira on Wednesday.
The Blue Raiders scored four in the first and two more in the second to go up 6-0.
Elmira got three runs in the fourth to get within 6-3, but Horseheads scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh, before Elmira added two run sin the bottom of the seventh.
Caitlin Yearick had three hits and scored two runs and Reagan Burge and Aubrey Howe each had two hits. Howe had a double, two RBI and a run scored and Burge had two RBI and a run scored.
Presely McInnes, Aubrey Maticic, Dylan Young, Briley Beach, Kolby Chaffee and Aubrey Griffith all had hits in the game.
Young had two RBI and Grace Cronin, Griffith and Maticic all had RBI, while Maticic, Chaffee and Griffith scored runs.
Chaffee got her first varsity win in her first start, striking out six and allowing five runs in a complete game effort.
Rylee Gonzalez had three hits and scored two runs for Elmira, with two RBI. She had two doubles in the game.
Madelyn Cavalier and Ava Cornacchio each had hits in the game. Cavalier scored a run and Grace Romeo had an RBI in the game.
Cornacchio worked.1 1/3 innings, striking out one. Aleida Agosto worked 3 2/3 innings. She allowed three hits and two runs, striking out one. Madison Smith pitched two innings, allowing four hits and an unearned run, striking out two.
