STAC GIRLS' BASKETBALL: HORSEHEADS USES BIG 2ND QUARTER TO TOP ELMIRA (24 PHOTOS) (2026-01-27)

Southern Tier Sports Report
HORSEHEADS — The Horseheads girls’ basketball team had three players in double figures as they topped Elira 50-38 on Tuesday night.

“Great, competitive game between two rivals,” Horseheads coach Andy Scott said. “Elmira never gave up and cut it to four with four minutes to go, but four points by (Giana) Hughey and 4-for-4 free throws from Sammie Bonnell and that was how the game ended.”

Elmira led 11-10 after one quarter, but Horseheads outscored the Express 17-2 in the second to lead 27-13 at the half. A three by Mariah Matias had Elmira within six in the third, and they got within four in the fourth, but that’s as close as they’d get.

Hughey had 16, Bonnell had 13 and Maggie Tremaine had 11 for the Blue Raiders.

Maddie Ribble and Sadie Gustin each had four points and Mya Piecuch had two points.

Matias had 14 and Meya Smith had 10 for Elmira.

Tamiah Brown had six for the Express and Ava Roberts had three points, while Elizabeth Hunter and ZyAshia Cade had two points each. Avery McCauley had one point for Elmira.

“Tough rivalry game tonight,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “Horseheads is a very good team and against a program like that you have to play close to a perfect game to come out on top. We didn’t quite get there tonight.”
