COLLEGE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: ELMIRA GRADS MEET UP AS EC FALLS TO GENESEO (24 PHOTOS) (2026-01-17)

Elmira, N.Y. – The Elmira College Soaring Eagles women's basketball team hosted the Knights of SUNY Geneseo inside Speidel Gymnasium for an Empire 8 conference matchup on Tuesday evening. Elmira fought hard but fell short after a strong second half by Geneseo, dropping the contest 56-40.

The matchup featured three Elmira graduates, with Ellie Clearwater playing for Geneseo and Amarionah Dixon and Lauren Miller player for Elmira. 

Clearwater played 17 minutes for Geneseo in the win. She had two points, two steals, two assists and two rebounds. 

The Soaring Eagles were led by Dixon, who had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Miller had five points for Elmira College. 
 
Play-By-Play
The Knights opened the scoring with a layup on the first possession of the game. The Soaring Eagles were able to answer right away with a free throw jumper by Amarionah Dixon. The teams traded small runs, Elmira capping a 5-0 run with a three pointer by Lauren Miller to pull ahead 7-6. A pair of three pointers for the Soaring Eagles, one from Dixon and the other from Mia Welty, tied up the game. A late basket for the Knights gave them the advantage after the first quarter, 15-13. Emma Ryan scored five points in a row to start the second quarter, putting Elmira up 18-15. Geneseo responded with a 12-3 run of their own to regain the lead. A three point shot from Mia Welty and a layup from Dixon concluded the half, pulling Elmira within two points at the half, trailing 28-26.

Geneseo started the second half strong with a 9-2 run to start pulling away from the Soaring Eagles. In response, Mia Welty drained a three pointer to cut at the deficit. The Knights strong third quarter continued with a 7-0 run to continue pulling away. Geneseo outscored Elmira 18-7 in the third quarter and went into the fourth up 46-33. Geneseo's strong second half continued into the fourth quarter, opening with a 6-0 run. A pair of layups for Dixon would open the scoring in the fourth quarter for Elmira. The Soaring Eagles battled but it was not enough to match the strong second half by the Knights, as Geneseo held a 56-40 advantage at the final buzzer.
 
Leaders 
Emma Ryan and Mia Welty both scored nine points for Elmira.
