ELMIRA — The Elmira Express girls’ basketball team was edged by Union-Endicott 69-67 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
“Girls played really hard,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “When one of your best players isn’t there we had a couple of kids step up, so that’s a good thing for the future and will continue to work hard to get better.”
Gianna Gennarelli had 27 points to lead U-E in the win.
Without leading scorer Mariah Matias on the day, the Express got a career-high 21 points from freshman Avery McCauley.
Meya Smith had 20 points for the Express in the game.
McCauley had three threes, and scored nine points in the third quarter. She had seven rebounds and two assists in the game. She had four of the six Elmira points in overtime.
Smith had a double-double, adding 13 rebounds, along with five blocked shots and an assist. Smith had seven points in the opening quarter.
Ava Roberts had a career-high 15 points, adding three boards and an assist.
Zy’Ashiha Cade had five points, along with three boards and two assists and Tamiah Brown had four points, four rebounds and two assists.
Mykenzie Dickerson had two points and Anna Osborne finished with one point. Abigail Valicenti had four rebounds in the game.
