ELMIRA —The Elmira Express returned to the mat over the weekend, as they kick off another girls’ wrestling season.

“It’s been exciting,” Elmira coach AJ Sindoni said. “We are expecting a big year from our girls. We have been working hard all offseason. We have a big group in the offseason, so we are excited for the season to get started.”

The Express have their own wrestling room for the girls this year.

“I tell the girls all the time how lucky they are that the Elmira School District has supported the girls’ wrestling team the way they have,” Sindoni said. “We have our own wrestling room, they order singlets as I need them, whenever I need them. Whatever we need they are going to get for us and you don’t see support like that at every school, so it’s nice to be ahead of the section with that.”

The Express have a solid roster heading into the season.

“We have a lot of returners coming back,” Sindoni said. “Some girls that can win sectional titles and compete at states this year. We have a lot of good, young athletes from seventh through ninth grade, which is a great core group of girls that have been in the offseason learning, so it’s been great to start the year and not have to catch girls up who were newer. They were already caught up because of their offseason commitment.”
