Southern Tier Sports ReportELMIRA — The Elmira Express opened the season with a 59-42 win over Johnson City on Saturday at the Elmira College Tip-Off Showcase.
Mariah Matthis led Elmira with 21 points and Meya Smith finished with 12 points.
Zy Cade had nine for the Express, Ava Roberts added seven and Avery McCauley had six points.
Lizzy Hunter and Tamiah Brown had two points each for the Express.
“It was a solid start to the season,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “We still have some things to tighten up, but we’ll take the win. We had balanced scoring across the roster, and our defensive intensity was strong for most of the game.
“A big shoutout to Elmira College and coach Thad Phillips for hosting a great showcase for local girls basketball. We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it.”
